A burner that ticks and never lights is almost always electrical rather than a gas supply problem, and the order below is the order it gets tested in.

Cracked electrode or a chafed spark lead
The ticking is the spark generator doing its job. If nothing catches, the spark is jumping somewhere it should not — a hairline crack in the ceramic, or a lead rubbed through where it passes the burner box.

Sea-level orifices at 5,280 feet
There is roughly 17 per cent less air up here. A range still on its factory jets runs rich: tall orange flames, sooted pan bottoms, and a simmer that dies the moment you turn your back.

Grease in the burner box and blocked ports
Years of roasting put fat under the caps and into the ports. The flame goes ragged, the flame sensor stops reading it, and the safety valve shuts the burner down a minute after lighting.
Worth knowing. If a burner lights from a match but not from the spark, the fault is on the ignition circuit and the gas side is fine. That one distinction saves an hour of looking in the wrong place.
