Fill, drain, spray and dry are four separate circuits. Which one is at fault is usually obvious from where the water is, or is not, at the end of a cycle.

The drain path, from air gap to disposer
Water standing in the tub is more often the path than the pump: a plugged air gap, a blocked disposer branch, or a corrugated hose that has sagged and holds a slug of water.

Fill side: inlet valve screen and latch switch
A cycle that runs with too little water leaves grit everywhere and full detergent cups. Either the inlet screen is choked or the door latch switch is telling the control the door is not shut.

Spray and dry: arms, feed tube, vent flap
Clean plates below and gritty ones above means the upper arm is not spinning or its feed tube is split. Everything soaking at the end usually means the vent flap has seized and the fan behind it has burnt out.
Worth knowing. Grit on the top rack is a spray problem, not a detergent problem. Changing brands will not fix it, and the test takes two minutes with the door open mid-cycle.
