Where is the water on the floor coming from?
In one sentence
Clean water pooling at the front usually came from inside the cabinet and could not reach its drain; water arriving from behind the unit is the plumbed side, and that one wants the shut-off closed. — Viking Repair Denver Pros, (720) 903-2603
What it usually turns out to be
-
Melt water backing out of a blocked drain
Frost cleared off the coil has to go somewhere, and when the defrost drain will not take it the water pools inside, freezes, builds, and eventually creeps over the sill at the bottom of the door. It shows up as a thin, clean puddle at the front on a rough schedule, with a patch of ice under the drawers that nobody noticed.
-
The valve or its fittings are weeping
The water inlet valve sits at the back where the plumbing arrives, and a slow weep from it or from a compression fitting beside it runs down and out along the floor. Water appearing behind or beside the unit, rather than at the door, points here — and so does a damp patch that is worse in the morning after a quiet night.
-
A filter change that did not seat
A cartridge fitted a quarter-turn short, or an O-ring rolled on the way in, will hold for a while and then let go under line pressure. If anyone has changed a water filter in the last month or two, say so when you call: it moves the filter housing straight to the top of the list to be checked.
-
Ice melting where it should not be
A bin of cubes that has partly thawed and refrozen into a lump tells you the freezer itself has been warm, and the water running out of the bin is a consequence rather than the fault. Chasing the puddle here gets you nowhere; the question is why the freezer stopped holding.
What that means for your kitchen
Getting the two sides apart is most of the diagnosis, and you can do it from the doorway: dry the floor completely, lay a sheet of kitchen paper at the front and another at the back, and see which one takes up water first. That single answer decides whether the visit starts inside the cabinet or behind it.
Follow-up questions
Should I turn the water off to the refrigerator?
If water is arriving from behind the cabinet and you can easily reach the shut-off under the sink or in the basement, close it. That stops the supply side without touching anything under pressure. If the puddle is clean and at the front, it is melt water, the shut-off changes nothing, and a towel will hold it.
Can a built-in be pulled out to look behind it?
Not by hand, and it is not a job to improvise. A built-in is fixed into the cabinetry, carries a water line and a heavy panel-ready door, and floors get gouged by people trying. Leave it where it is, describe which end the water reaches, and Viking Repair Denver Pros will bring it forward properly on (720) 903-2603.
